Start your career in healthcare as a Certified Medical Administrative Assistant. In the growing field of healthcare, qualified medical administrative assistants are in high demand in clinics, hospitals, insurance companies, dental offices, and private provider clinics. This program covers the professional soft skills and hands-on technical skills to work as a patient service representative, medical secretary, medical administrative assistant, or medical records clerk. Upon successful completion of this course, students will take the Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) certification exam offered by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).

What you will learn:
  • Learn what is required to succeed as a Medical Administrative Assistant
  • Master multitasking as it relates to scheduling appointments, processing insurance requests, maintaining records and corresponding with patients

  • Master the fundamentals of medical terminology and ethical best practices
  • Understand the basics of working with medical documents, medical billing, and coding processes
  • Identify the professional traits that a medical assistant must possess
  • Discuss the various administrative job duties of a medical assistant
  • Recognize the importance of professional certification  
Admissions Requirements
  • Be at least 18 years of age on the first day of class.
  • Documentation of high school diploma, GED or equivalent, or college degree. Note: If high school diploma or college degree are earned outside of the United States, the diploma or degree must be formally evaluated (and translated if needed) by an approved agency prior to program admission. Allow a minimum of three weeks for evaluation/translation process. Prospective students will be responsible for cost.
  • English Language Learners (ELL/ESL): If English is not the first language, prospective students must complete a CASAS assessment with acceptable score prior to program admission. CASAS assessments can be scheduled by emailing at tjace@pvcc.edu or calling 434-961-5461. Include your first and last name, program of interest, and program start date in your email. Assessment should be completed at least one week prior to program start date. CASAS assessment is also recommended, but not required, for prospective students who feel their reading comprehension needs improvement.

This is a FastForward Program: FastForward programs are short-term training courses for industry credentials in high-demand jobs. Funding may be available to offset the tuition cost for individuals who meet eligibility requirements. Funding is limited and therefore distributed on a first-come, first-come basis.

WCG Grant: Eligible Virginia residents may pay only one-third (1/3) of the full tuition cost. To qualify, you must meet the Virginia domicile requirements. Virginia "domicile" means you have lived in Virginia and intended to stay here indefinitely for at least one year before the date of application.

G3/FANTIC Initiative: The G3 and FANTIC programs makes it possible for Virginians with low or modest income to pursue jobs in high-demand fields. Funding covers an additional 1/3 of the course tuition.
